{\noindent Dear  Carlos:}

Thank you for your letter of 17 February 1982, and for catching the error
in the tape listing. Apparently, I sent you an older obsolete list by mistake.

I am sorry to hear that you have had so much trouble with your present
\TEX . It seems that you might make good use of the up-to-date version of
\TEX\ that was on the tape, or that you might now get from Oregon
Software. One mitigating circumstance: The {\caps manual.tex} file was
not meant to \TEX\ without some fixing as several statements to halt the
compilation had been deliberately left in the file to show what yet needed
fixing in {\caps tangle} and {\caps weave}. The {\caps tangle.tex} and
{\caps weave.tex} files were included for comparison purposes, to see if
your {\caps weave.pas} (obtained by tangling the {\caps weave.web} file)
was doing the right thing, although they should compile correctly.

You are the first person to have reported any significant trouble with the
new {\caps web} material. In fact, most people have been surprised at how
little trouble they were having. There are a certain number of
installation-dependent statements that do have to be fixed. You can locate
most of these by looking up the ``system dependencies'' listed in the
indexes on page 103 and on page 170 of the {\caps web} documentation. One
source of trouble may be that your compiler may not like the {\bf others:}
construct and the large number of cases the are used in some case
statements.  Perhaps you should look into getting a newer {\caps pascal}
compiler.
